So I know it's been ages since I've updated the actual site: I'm sorry for that. Life has been throwing me a few curves (good ones!), and transitioning job situations and coming out here to the bay area for a few months has put a bit of a pause on some of the flow I had going for EotC.

Rords of the Froor was thrown by Circle of Fire. For those of you who don't know about it, it's infamous for being crazy... and a crazy good time. With duo's formed that night between an "amateur" and a "professional," each team had to take shots before competing for the round. In between, random battles such as a worm race were interjected. While the battles were not happening, the dancing and partying definitely was. For any of you who can get a chance to experience Rords sometime (they're also spreading Rords! I know Texas will have one sometime coming up), do it. It's quite the party!!!

6.25.11 Yin & Yang [Atlanta, GA]

As some of you know, this summer as has been slam packed with jams for me. That being said, I'm mad behind in getting everything edited and posted, and am multitasking through several events at once. My one thing is this: I don't want to sacrifice quality for speediness, so thank you all for your patience.

After constantly driving down to Florida for jams, it was nice having a hometown event thrown in the mix. Yin & Yang was my boy Oreo [bi285]'s jam: just a few in, as he's a new promoter. Thrown at Rec Atlanta, it was a 2-on-2 with a twist: a pool party. This of course was a big hit with the mass of bboys/spectators. Alpha and Ethical kept the jams happening indoors while Anibal spun outdoors by the pool and the Suno.

Congrats to Mpwo and Mark from Jungle Brothers [Houston, TX] for taking everyone out and leaving with the cash.

For Your Soul is a jam thrown by Lito [Soul Rockerz, Soul Movement], a bboy madly in love with the culture, growing his scene, and God. This jam is his way of loving on the people he most wants to invest in. DJed by Basic [Little Green Apples], B-Ryan [Main Ingrediantz] and Magic [Unique Styles], the jam held a 5-on-5 Crew Battle and 1-on-1 Bgirl Battle. The turnout was good, the vibes were good, and the battles were hype.

I had come to For Your Soul 3 last year, when hitting the Florida scene was still new to me. The experience had left an impact on me, and that's when I realized I had to make it out to more Florida jams... and now everyone thinks I'm a Florida-based photographer with the many trips I make down!

Lito had talked to me months and months ago about getting on board as his official photographer for For Your Soul, and I was stoked to accept that. Much love for this guy: the first willing to cover my travel costs and take care of me and show me sooo much love for what I'm doing with Eye of the Cypher.

I stayed busy snapping ALL night, and shot from Prelims up, which is rare nowadays, so lots and lots of photos ahead.

Congrats to Shoguns of the Circle [Miami] for taking the crew battles, and Maresco [VA, XOS] for winning the bgirl battles.

For now, the top 16 crew snaps, and be ready for the flood gates to open up.

So I had been in contact with Mouse [Future Legendz / Enigma] about making the trip down for SirQix 6 for a minute before the jam actually came into view. I had heard good things about SirQix for a while now, and figured it was time to join in the telling of those stories.

Once it came around, it ended being a road trip taken by myself and two others: Oreo and Will [bi285, check out their youtube page]. Thanks to SwiftNyce, we had a place to stay, which a) makes traveling much cheaper and b) allows for much more people-meeting and fun times to be had. Those pictures will remain on my personal facebook for the people involved to enjoy.

This was a two day event, with the first being a day of workshops and Q&A with the RedBull BC One team and a pre-jam jam, determining who would win free entry into the next day's event. Getting to see and chill with lots of cats I hadn't seen in a long time as well as meet new faces was great.

The jam itself was dope. The turnout was great, as I expected, and the vibe, beats, venue, all was good. One huge highlight everyone was really pumped for was the Red Bull BC One cypher, where a handful of selected participants battled out in brackets to see who would rep for the south east. He would move on to compete nationally for a spot to compete in Red Bull BC One. Congrats to Vicious [MF Kidz, Kissimmee, FL] for taking that win.

Along with the 2-on-2 bboy battle, there was an all styles battle as well, and all the dancers that made it up the brackets in both were dope and great to watch. Cyphers were fun... and everywhere, which was a nice change from some jams where people are just practicing, sitting around, etc.

Thanks Mouse for throwing a great event, and thanks Tampa for the hospitality. Hope to head back down there soon. Till then, I'll see all you crazy kids in Orlando for For Your Soul. :]

5.28.11 Ritual Warfare: 4th Encounter [Houston, TX]

This was my first trip to Houston, since last time my ATL cats went, I ended up having to skip out. Stayed the weekend with my boy Mpwo and his boys, some of who I already knew, some I met. I had a good time at the jam, but honestly, it was the entire weekend just vibing and randomly dancing that made the trip amazing for me. Oh, and I also managed to get a very small few (but quality!) shots for the Bboy YRBK.
I will definitely be back out in Houston, hopefully soon enough. Just not on Memorial Day, that's mad expensive.

Anyway, Ritual Warfare was thrown by PawFlo (Vicious Germs). It was a 2 v 2, with a 1 v 1 all styles battle. I competed, so photos didn't start till I was done with that.

I know that's a quick recap, but there's just too much to say bout the trip!

Bashville was awesome. I always have a blast there, and this past weekend was no exception. In fact, for the MOST part, I think I had an even better time than usual. Although I couldn't get myself thinking about the trip during the week leading up to it, once it hit I realized how much I was ready and needed it.

I'm going to update this recap later... but I wanted to start getting photos up. I'm sick and tired, so yeah.

Shoutouts my Nashville fam for working their butts off to pull this off; to Ivan and Remind for being there, being hype and hillarious, and really chill guys; to BI285 for working hard all night filming the event; to NufSed for the shirt :P; to Mex and his boys for letting me chill with them and have a home base for my camera.

Awesome seeing everyone again, meeting new people. Random thoughts: Palmer, don't forget the TENNISBALL! Jeremy, your shout out was amazing. You earned so many points in my book for that one. X-centric, come to Atl and teach me more waacking and voguing :P; Alpha, B-ryan, Basic: AMAAAAZING MUSIC! Kept me so hype. So many other thoughts... anyway that's a snippet!

So... the thing about work and Loose Screws is that they just didn't get along. So that meant getting to the Jam around 9:15 on Friday, and sleeping most of Saturday due to two weeks of intense non-stop (LITERALLY) work and no sleep (which means I got to the jam at.. 10 something that day).

All that to say I didn't get to shoot nearly as much as I would like. Oh, forgot to mention I pulled my camera out Friday and realized that since I had to do shoots for work-related things, I had left all my memory cards at work. Fail. No pics Friday night. Also, not sleeping much for days and the insane work made me feel so off. I could tell. I couldn't shoot right, etc. But I did get some stuff, and I also got a good little start to the Bboy YrBook. So that's cool.

Deuces Wild 6. Wow. So timing was a bit off so some cuts had to be made, such as going from qualifiers to top 8 versus top 16, etc, but really, that didn't change the tone and mood of the jam for me. For some of you, you know I shot and reviewed Deuces Wild a while back... when it was still in Athens, and was a bit disappointed in some things. All I have to say is that Johnny has really really taken his jams to the next level. He's committed to offering what he can to the growing bboy community in North Metro Atlanta, and has put a lot into doing it right.

I have nothing but good things to say about Deuces Wild 6. Turnout was great: the skatepark was packed, in my opinion. The vibe was good, the music was good (DJs AlphaTrion and Ethical), the judges were diverse (Keebz, QKong, Panic), the battles were HYPE! Thanks everyone for the energy.

Thanks to Mex for coming out and bringing MF Kidz with him from Orlando. They won, so congrats guys, and definitely deserved it.

I tried to make it to Outbreak last year, but it didn't happen, so going this year was definitely a must on my list. In short, it was a great jam. Well organized and timed, cypher time, good battles, great music, etc. Also, hanging out at the hotel with a bunch of bboys was a blast, and was the time that I feel I really got to meet and chat with new faces.

I've been crazy busy, and still am, getting ready for the holidays and all. That being said, my summary here is going to be short; but ask anyone who went and they''ll give you an earful of good stories. Brazilian food, nineteen round birthday battles, party-pooping-police... yeah, the whole deal.

Anyway, I'm also late on the photos, and I realize that. So here's batch 1 of I'm not sure how many.

11.13 Get Rooted [ Nashville TN ]

Get Rooted was a jam thrown by Evillyn and Vanicia at RockeTown in Nashville, TN. The competition was a 2-on-2, but it was way more than that. The cypher time, the guest artist MC, the whole vibe in general was really dope and chill. Although it wasn't a huge event, it was one thrown in part to allow those newer to the scene, especially the students learning through classes and practice at RockeTown, to experience the culture.

I really only got so many shots since my girl Patience and I (Total Knock Out) entered the battles.

A costumed 2-on-2 thrown by Zapper of HBO. It wasn't a huge turnout, and not everyone dressed up, but the few bboys dressed up did a pretty good job. K8 from IKnowMyHipHop.com was Smurfette along with her fellow bgirl Stash1. My good friends Soda and Jason battled as "Rad Dads"... best costume of the night, if I might say so myself.

I went to the A3C Hip Hop Festival (happens annually) this year. It was held at the Masquerade and lasted from Thursday evening, through Saturday night. Attending the Red Bull 45s on Friday night, and the bboy 1-on-1 competition, hosted by Johnny Blaze, on Saturday was quite enough to wear me out, but I had a good time and the music was definitely rewarding.

So, I went in to chill, enjoy it, and to shoot. I know EotC is a bboy photo blog, but hey, what can we do sans our wonderful DJs yeh? That being said, here are the photos from both nights:

9.25.10 Deuces Wild 4

Johnny Blaze threw another Deuces Wild (4, last one is here), except instead of in Athens, GA this time, it was in Duluth at the skate park in Discover Mills mall. Skate park means half pipes, and that's where the battles were held. It was a 5-on-5 crew battle, and the turnout was rather impressive: not huge, but larger than I would have thought. It brought out faces I didn't know as well.

Anyway, I was having a pretty off night, but I did get some shots worth posting, so here they are:

8.14.10 Baka Breaks

This was a jam thrown by a promoter called Baka Entertainment in Lawrenceville, FL. It was a small 18-up event at a bar, with 1-on-1, 2-on-2, and 5-on-5 battles. To my suprise, the turnout was better than I thought, and some bboys we know from Indiana ended up coming down.

Despite the holdups and problems during the night, and the poor DJing, the event was fun and all I knew had a good time. I didn't plan on it, but ended up shooting, and it was fun too. The light enticed me, and I "unsigned up" myself from the 1-on-1 so I could focus on shooting.

Actually, I just got myself another point-and-shoot (my old old one died), so I've been shooting video as well!

When it comes to capturing an event, I don't always see myself as an event photographer, but as an artist trying to capture mood, or my mind's picture of a situation. Also, I like to play with styles and techniques to keep shooting bboys fresh for me. The one I used that night I really have fun with; it's called dragging the flash.

All that being said, the video is a mood-collage of the event, as are the photos.

This is actually my second Florida Jam... ever. My friend Lito threw this one, and all I had heard about previous ones were positive, so I had to try to make it and check it out. Well, all worked out and I ended up in Orlando Friday late night through Sunday afternoon. Aside from picking up a bunch of feet-accessories and such, I also had interesting hotel experiences, water-hating-moments, and a great, great time at the main event.

Lito did an awesome job organizing the whole thing. The DJs (DJ Basic, B-Ryan, and Magic, all from FL) really kept the vibe up the entire night. Both the 5-on-5 crew battles and the bgirl battles were really fun to watch, and the competition was hot. Performances, messages, everything included... the night flowed well, didn't feel too long, and left me feeling motivated all the way around! (Ask anyone who went if you wanna know what I mean!)

Anyway, enough blabbing from me. You guys all just wanna see the photos. Much much love and thanks to all you who are sooo supportive of this pet project of mine, and for bugging me constantly about when I'd have these posted! Also, I couldn't be more grateful to Lito for his hospitality and love upon us coming into his scene, his state, and his jam. Me and my camera are just a humble little duo, but he took care of me and helped me get the shots for you guys, so thanks so much, Lito!!! Can't wait to be back in Orlando for the next round!

Deuces Wild 3 was an Athens jam thrown by DJ Blaze. It was a 2 on 2 bboy battle and 1 on 1 popping battle at a bar in that area. Got some good shots, but unfortunately one thing after the other went wrong that night, which kind of put a damper on the event. We live and learn, eh? Still, thanks to all who threw it for their work they put into it. Stuff just needed a bit more re-thinking, I think.

Ok... yeah. It's been ages since I've posted. Been SWAMPED at work... and been semi demotivated with the photos. Got loads to edit, and I'm drowning in it: wedding photos, portrait sessions, baby flicks, etc.

ANYWAY, to get something going again, here are a few of the snaps I got from Rock or Flock, a 2-on-2 2-year-under battle and a 1-on-1 battle. This is all that's going up from this event, so sorry if you were hoping for something that happened simultaneously as a light flash.

5.22.10 Hickory Lake Battle / Outreach

It was a 1 on 1 battle (along with a buncha other little ones) at an apartment complex. Food, music by DJ AlphaTrion, Atlanta's top Bboy DJ, and heat, courtesy of the Sun.

Anyway, I just snapped a few to update this old, rusty blog. More to come soon, though, since I'll be shooting at our open session tonight, which has been moved to Relapse West off Chattahoochee Road (which is off Howell Mill Road, which is Exit 252 off i75), at 7pm-ish till whenever-ish.

Anyway.... onto the shots. Check back soon for the awesomeness.
And then, probably next week, I'm going to do another EotC shoot... which is gonna be INSANELY DOPE. And lastly: In July, I'll be doing a shoot with Napalm. Shweeeeeet!

5.08.10: EotC Offsite Shoot #1

Wow... So I finally managed to really get some planned/posed shots done... not at a jam, not during battle. I've wanted to for a LONG time, and finally planned it out and did it. I actually made it an open invite, this first one, but really I think from here on out I'm going to select who to shoot, etc. Many people couldn't make it, many people said they'd come and despite all my begging, wouldn't either change their RSVP or contact me about it... but still, it turned out good.

Thanks to Soda, Jason and Michelle from Chattanooga, TN, and AlphaTrion from Atlanta for making it out and letting me shoot you.

Two car-fulls of us from Atlanta, Nashville, and Chattanooga got together to make the 10 hour (from Atlanta) drive up to Virginia for Circles. Most of us had to work Friday, so that meant driving in the middle of the night and arriving early morning. Suprisingly, I think I prefer driving at night now. Makes it feel like you don't lose a day, except when you hit that sunrise. Then it's terrible.

Anyway, the jam was good, for me anyway. The prelims took FOREVER though, which happened in between the first and second round of the Bonnie and Clyde. That was the battle I participated in. Anyway, after I was done competing, I started shooting and watching the crew battles. They were definitely good, and there were lotsa of dope bboys out there doing their thing to Skeme Richard's tracks. (Won't lie, I wasn't feeling the beats for part of the night, but the ones later on in the battles were good).

Anyway, congrats to Rep Styles for winning the 4 on 4. The duo that won the Bonnie and Clyde... I forgot their names, but she was sweet as ever and from Rome, visiting in New York for the last three months or so. So glad she took it. She deserved it!

3.20.10 Soul Cypher 11

AlphaTrion and I decided to make the 6ish-hour trek down to Gainesville, Florida for Soul Cypher. Considering the fact that I'm a state above, I had yet to go to a Florida jam. Alpha had been wanting to go to Soul Cypher for a while now, so the discussion about making the trip came easy between us. Unfortunately, none of our close group of bboys/bgirls could make it, especially since the weekend before was spent in Nashville for Bashville Stampede, and the following weekend was taking us to Circles in Virginia. Yes, the most condensed traveling schedule yet. I love it. And my chores are stacking up. And my apartment is a wreck. Dang.

Basic, B Ryan, Loki, and Robzilla provided the beats and kept the battles hype. We didn't make the first night, so we were there to chill and watch the crew battles. In the end, Main Ingrediantz and Backyard Funk duked it out, with the former taking the win in the end. It was a dope battle to watch, and both sides did really well. In fact, I heard several people's vote went to Backyard Funk.

I really didn't get shots of it, but there was a popping battle and an MC Battle as well. The MC Battle was actually really fun to watch. It blows my mind when people can think so fast and freestyle about random items handed to them on the spot.

Anyway, shoutout to JJ and Katie Mac for their awesome hospitality. They both from the start (talking to them over the net) to the end (hugs and byes outside of JJ's apartment) were insanely nice, welcoming and accommodating. So thanks, guys, for being great. Hit me up when you're in ATL :}

Bashville Stampede 6 consisted of a 3-on-3 bboy battle, a 2-on-2 bgirl battle, and a 1-on-1 all styles battle. All around, the jam was very well run and loads of good times. Cyphers were constantly going on around the venue, battles were hype, and people were chill. Basic and Franco De Leon DJed the main room and bboy battles, while AlphaTrionK kept it rocking in the All Styles room.

Mig187, Palmer, and Thesis judged the main battle. Djamel, Vendetta, and Rockafella judged the bgirl battle. Kadance, Stringz, and Pringlz (I believe) judged the All Styles. Many of the judges as well as some others taught workshops the night before.

2.20.10: Loose Screws 11

Loose Screws, an HBO crew bboy jam, reached it's 11th year as a 2-on-2 bboy (and 1-on-1 popping) battle. 62 crews signed up to battle, and instead of doing a showcase round to cut it down, it was setup as a bracket. Honestly, I think that took way too long: people were getting tired, muscles were tightening up and cooling down, etc, but it was an idea.

I didn't snap huge coverage of the event, since I was entered in the battle as well, and wasn't in the mood to shoot till that was over. I did have fun shooting some cyphering though. Gotta get a bit artsy sometimes :}

This was a quickly thrown together cypher jam, pulled together by Zapper (HBO crew) to raise some money for Haiti in light of the recent disasters. Held at the Atl Bench, DJed by AlphaTrion, and even drummed by Skit and Fathom (wasn't there in time to get shots of Skit on the drums... next time?), it was good times all around.

Don't get mad to see that I didn't cover the cypher battles, but rather one random cypher battle. Fun stuff, though, and I had fun playing w/ the lighting for these shots. Wish I could shoot more like these with out having to fear for the my flash's life.

1.16.10: Waba's Final Jam

Sometimes, you're just not feeling it.
This day was one of them. I still shot a handful (a larger handful than I had thought), but even the ones that turned out somewhat ok were fairly disappointing. Could be due to some frustrations at the event that just killed it for me photographywise as well... like the moisture from the rain that made the entire floor so slick that you couldn't dance, but whatever it was, I just couldn't shoot that day. I won't go into the rest of the disappointing details...

Anyway, I figured I'd post some for those of you who were hoping to see some shots from that afternoon. Then I can bury this and move on.

Congrats to Battle Instincts for winning, despite the constant slippage on the lino. They took the three prize swords.

Sorry for this being so late... had to finish getting Evolution up. I also didn't shoot a lot since I was competing. A few of the shots are taken by Alphatrion, so thanks for that!

This was a King of the Hill battle. Epidemic (Battle Instincts) took the prize: he definitely deserved it! DJ Ethical was spinning the beats, and the ATL Bench provided the space.
